Policy/Procedure

1. Fire personnel finding money or valuables at an incident shall notify the Incident Commander and, if possible, gather the money or items and present them to him or her. Suspected crime scenes shall not be disturbed, nor items removed from those areas.

2. If there are no police on scene, the IC shall direct Dispatch to send a police crew to collect the articles found. While awaiting arrival of law enforcement officers, if possible, given the nature of the incident, valuables shall be inventoried, preferably in the presence of at least one witness.

Upon arrival of law enforcement officers, the Incident Commander shall relinquish possession of the articles and request a receipt in exchange. (TPD form 23.12)

NOTE: Valuables may also be given to a Fire Investigator, if present.

3. Firearms that are discovered at the scene shall be left in place, if possible. The Incident Commander shall be notified and the area left undisturbed. The IC shall request a police response, if necessary, and law enforcement officers will remove the weapon(s). Toledo Fire and Rescue Department operations may be suspended if there is a danger posed by the weaponry present.

4. Appropriate documentation shall be entered on all EMIRs, NFIRs, and in company journals, including the amount of money, type and quantity of valuable items found, and unit number of the police crew or FIU personnel to whom the valuables were surrendered.
