C-65 Mailbox Fires

Policy/Procedure

1. When responding to the report of a fire inside a mailbox, fire personnel shall use CO2 or Dry Chemical extinguisher to knock down and extinguish fire.

2. Water shall be used only if the extinguishers above fail to control the fire. Consider using water on the exterior of the mailbox to aid extinguishment.

3. The Incident Commander shall instruct Dispatch to notify the United States Postal Service (USPS). The IC shall ask that they send a representative to incident location to open the mailbox.

4. Fire personnel shall remain on the scene, in-service, until the USPS representative arrives or they are dispatched on another incident. If forced to leave the scene for another incident, the crew shall return following its mitigation to meet the USPS representative.
