Policy/Procedure

In the event fire personnel need to lay a supply or attack line across a railroad track, the following procedures shall be taken:

1. Fire personnel shall lay the supply line to the railroad track.

2. Fire personnel shall break the hose, leaving enough hose to hand stretch over to the other side of the track.

3. Apparatus shall be driven to the other side of the tracks and shall continue the hose lay from the other side of the track to the incident.

4. Fire personnel shall begin to tunnel under the railroad tracks between a set of ties. Crews shall attempt to dig so that the hose will end up at a point near a railroad tie.

5. If the line is needed immediately, Command shall direct Dispatch to notify railroad personnel that we are crossing the tracks with our hose and shall direct crews to connect the hose.

6. In extreme emergencies, a red flare placed in the center of the track may be used to signal a train to make an emergency stop. This should only be used in an extreme emergency as a train engineer’s effort to bring the train to a sudden stop could cause a derailment.
