C-37 Fire Helments

Policy/Procedure

1. All fire helmets worn by Toledo Fire and Rescue Department personnel shall meet the NFPA 1971 Standard on Protective Ensemble for Structural Fire Fighting.

  1. Members will be issued a helmet that meets the NFPA standard above.

  2. Members may also purchase, utilize and maintain a helmet (Normal color for member’s rank) that is certified to meet NFPA 1971.

2. Members shall maintain all personal protective equipment in such condition as to provide the protection for which it was designed.

3. HELMETS MUST HAVE AN APPROVED FACE SHIELD ATTACHED TO THE HELMET AT ALL TIMES AND USE AS FOLLOWS:

  1. To meet the NFPA standard for eye protection for structural firefighting the one piece flip down face shields and the Bourke eye shields must be used in combination with an SCBA face piece.

  2. To comply with TFRD protocol and meet the NFPA standard for eye protection during overhaul or extrication (or other tasks when used as the sole protection device) the one piece flip down face shields and the Bourke eye shields must be used in combination with goggles or safety glasses.

4. Should a member decide to wear an approved non-issued helmet with attached shield, the words and/or symbols on the helmet shall be limited to the following:

  1. Member’s name
  2. Member’s badge number
  3. The number of a TFRD fire station
  4. Other words and/or symbols as approved by the Fire Chief or his designee.
