Policy/Procedure

1. Wheel chocks have been provided to many of the first line large apparatus. All Engines, Heavy Squads, and Trucks will be provided with wheel chocks to allow apparatus operation without risk of unanticipated movement. Wheel chocks shall be used whenever an Engine is in pump gear. Wheel chocks shall also be used whenever a Truck has jacks extended or is located on uneven ground.

2. Wheel chocks shall be deployed using the following directions and criteria:

1. Chocks supplied with apparatus are matched to the vehicle using NFPA criteria. Apparatus operators shall not substitute non-approved chocks except in an immediate emergency situation.
   
   
2. Wheel chocks are not a substitute for proper parking brake operation. Wheel chocks are auxiliary devices to aid in vehicle retention, especially when parked on steep grades, hills, or inclines and or while engaged in pumping, firefighting, or rescue operations.
   
   
3. Apparatus operators shall chock the wheels when the vehicle is in a stationary firefighting or rescue mode.
   
   
4. Engines require two (2) chocks, Trucks require four (4) chocks, and Rescue Units require two (2) chocks.
   
   
5. On level ground the following method of chocking shall apply:
   
   
   1. Engines and Rescue Units - apparatus operators shall chock rear wheel (either side) both in front of and behind the wheel.
      
      
   2. Trucks - apparatus operators shall chock front and rear wheels (either side) both in front of and behind the wheel.
      
      
6. If parked on a grade the following method of chocking shall apply:
   
   
   1. Engine and Rescue Units - apparatus operators shall chock two (2) different tires on the downhill side.
      
      
   2. Truck - apparatus operators shall chock four (4) different wheels on the downhill side.
      
      
7. While deploying aerial devices, Truck operators shall ensure wheel chocks do not fall beneath tires when the jacks lift the vehicle’s wheels off the ground.
   
   
8. To avoid injury or vehicle damage, apparatus operators shall ensure chocks are removed from wheels and properly stowed before attempting to move vehicle.
