Policy/Procedure

The following guidance will be used to assist TFRD members wishing to become paramedics.

1. Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between Local 92 and TFRD, Section 2125.96, members wishing to enter paramedic training are responsible to complete all training and other requirements on their own time and will not be reimbursed for time spent in paramedic training.

2. TFRD members are eligible for education reimbursement if attending an accredited paramedic education program.

3. Before registering with an accredited paramedic education program, the TFRD Executive Fire Administrator (EFA) shall be notified of the student’s intent. The TFRD EFA will provide the prospective paramedic student instructions regarding eligibility and requirements of the education reimbursement program of The City of Toledo (COT).

4. The prospective paramedic student must submit a 100-5, Communication to both the Training Bureau Supervisor and the EMS Bureau Supervisor, detailing date entering program and estimated date of graduation from education program.

5. Understanding that each paramedic program and student may progress at different paces, it is imperative that the TFRD paramedic student make regular contact with the TFRD Training Bureau regarding class status and Progression.

6. Refer to the section of TFRD Intranet: Paramedic Internship Resources for requirements and items needed to be submitted to the TFRD Training Bureau before becoming eligible to work as a LCEMS paramedic.

7. At the time the member enters an accredited paramedic training program, they will also be enrolled in the LCEMS/TFRD paramedic internship program that consists of additional Life Squad ride time, and education, not covered through by the paramedic training program.

  • Completed paramedic skill sheet
  • Current State of Ohio paramedic cert. card
  • Valid driver’s license - National Registry cert. card
  • AHA BLS cert. card - ACLS cert. card
  • Verification of meeting with ALS Medical Director

9. When all requirements of the LCEMS / TFRD internship have been satisfied, the member will be added to the pharmacy license and begin their contractual obligation as a Life Squad paramedic.

10. CBA (2125.100) states that state recognized paramedics will received their 6% pay increase, within 30 days from the time they provide the Chief of Training a copy of their NREMT card.

11. Once a member is certified as EMT-P by the State of Ohio, the members may attend LCEMS CE.

12. Once members are added to the State of Ohio Pharmacy License for Lucas County, attendance at monthly LCEMS CE becomes mandatory.

13. Members attending LCEMS will sign in at the LCEMS training facility for in person learning. Once attendance is confirmed the students’ OT will be processed through TFRD Support Services.
