Purpose

Over the years we have found that the use of brine and salt on the city’s roadways has caused significant damage to our apparatus. In an attempt to reduce the wear and tear on our rigs, the city has purchased an under-body wash system and placed it at the Streets, bridges and Harbor facility located at 1189 W. Central Ave (next to the Tarta bus station). This policy and procedure shall provide TFRD personnel with a systematic procedure for utilizing the under-body wash system.

Policy/Procedure

During the winter months, all rigs shall go through the under-body wash system at least once a month (ideally on PM day, after PM and not before). Rigs may be sent through the system more frequently during periods of heavy snowfall.

When reporting to the Streets, Bridges and Harbor facility, please follow these step by step instructions:

1. Pull into the location off of Central Ave, then proceed to the back of the property.

2. The under-body wash system will be located in the last building on the right. Pull around to the back of the structure and center your rig so you can drive through.

3. When you pull up to the entrance the overhead door will automatically open. Note: The overhead door will stay open for approximately 40 seconds and then will automatically close. The overhead door will have will have to be reopened if this happens.

4. The Officer and one firefighter will exit the rig (If you are on a medic unit the person in the seat will have to do both jobs).

1. The firefighter will enter the building and move the rinse undercarriage tray into the center of the building (use the floor drain to center the tray).
   
   
2. The Officer will enter the building and once the rinse tray is in place they will move the pressure washer switch to the on position. After this is complete they will push the time/delay/start button (green button on the right). The greenlight will come on indicating the system is activated.

5. Once the de-salt solution starts spraying, drive the apparatus over the mechanism (it will spray for approximately 45 seconds). Make sure the overhead door is in the full up position before proceeding into the wash bay area.

6. Once complete, the system will shut down. There will be minor delay then the rinse section will begin.

7. When the rinse system starts, drive the apparatus over the rinse tray for approximately 45 seconds. Slowly exit the building ensuring that the overhead door is all the way up before proceeding.

8. Once the apparatus has exited the building, the firefighter shall put the rinse tray back to the side of the building, out of the way of normal traffic. This will help prevent damage to the equipment.

Note: In the event that the door starts coming down when your rig is going through, there is an emergency open button located on the wall next to the overhead door. Push this button and the door will automatically open back up.
