Policy/Procedure

1. Cell phone use of a personal nature during incidents is prohibited by all members between dispatch and in service time.

2. Cell phones may be carried but their use shall be limited to that which concerns official fire department business (phone calls to an alarm company, research of a drug on the internet, aerial view of a building etc.)

3. Personal cell phones and pagers shall be placed in ‘silent’ or ‘vibrate’ mode while responding or assigned to an incident.

4. Unless directed by command, fire personnel shall not initiate or receive personal phone calls, check emails, or engage in texting while at the scene of an emergency or other call for service.

5. Cell phones shall not be used by drivers of apparatus at any time while operating the vehicle. This includes the following situations:

  1. Instances in which they are responsible for pumping operations or positioning and maintaining aerial apparatus.

  2. Using a map/GPS function on a Smartphone while driving. Another crew member must provide direction
