Policy/Procedure

1. Male Hair Standard

  1. Regardless of the particular style an individual may choose for his hair, he will keep his hair neat, clean, well groomed, and properly trimmed at all times while on duty. The hair shall not exceed 2 inches on the top of the head as measured from the scalp, nor more than 1 and 1/2 inches from the side of the head as measured outward from the top of the ear. When combed, the hair shall be allowed over the ear but no more than two-thirds of the ear shall be so covered. Hair shall not fall over the eyebrows. At the neck, the hair shall not exceed outward more than one inch in any direction of its lowest point. The hair may touch the collar but not extend downward more than one inch beyond the top of the collar. In all cases, the bulk and length of the hair shall be measured while the firefighter is standing with the head in a normal carry position and with the top button of the shirt buttoned.

  2. While on duty male firefighters will not be permitted to pin or otherwise hold up their hair in order to conform to the above standards. Hair colors shall be of a natural color and not be extravagant or faddish.

2. Female Hair Standard

  1. Regardless of the particular style an individual may choose for her hair, she will keep her hair neat, clean, well groomed, and properly trimmed at all times while on duty. The hair shall not exceed 2 inches on the top of the head as measured from the scalp, nor more than 1 1/2 inches from the side of the head as measured outward from the top of the ear. When combed, the hair shall be allowed over the ear but no more than two-thirds of the ear shall be so covered. Hair shall not fall over the eyebrows. When worn down, the hair shall not extend downward more than four inches beyond the top of the collar. This includes when the hair is worn in a ponytail. While on duty female firefighters will be permitted to pin or otherwise hold up their hair utilizing plastic or rubber devices only.

  2. In all cases, the bulk and length of the hair shall be measured while the firefighter is standing with the head in a normal carry position and with the top button of the shirt buttoned.

  3. Hair colors shall be of a natural color and not be extravagant or faddish.

3. Male Fingernail Standards

  1. Members shall keep their fingernails clean and neatly trimmed so as not to interfere with the performance of their duties or present a safety hazard. While on duty, fingernails shall not exceed more than one-quarter inch beyond the tip of the finger. Only clear nail polish may be worn by male firefighters if they so choose.

4. Female Fingernail Standards

  1. Members shall keep their fingernails clean and neatly trimmed so as not to interfere with the performance of their duties or present a safety hazard. While on duty, fingernails shall not exceed more than one-quarter inch beyond the tip of the finger. Female firefighters will be permitted to wear neutral nail polish through which the moon of the nail can be seen, clear polish, or wear a French manicure with light white nail polish.

5. Male Sideburn Standards

  1. If a firefighter chooses to wear sideburns, they shall be neatly trimmed. Sideburns shall not flare to more than 1 1/2 inches in width, ending at a clean-shaven, horizontal line squared at the bottom. Sideburns shall not extend below the bottom of the earlobe.

6. Mustaches

  1. A neatly trimmed mustache of natural color may be worn. No portion of the mustache shall extend more than 1/2 inch beyond the corners of the mouth. Mustaches shall not cover or touch any portion of the lower lip. ”Handlebar” mustaches or other extreme types of mustaches shall not be permitted.

7. Beards

  1. When reporting for duty the firefighter's face shall be clean-shaven. Beards and goatees shall not be permitted. Facial hair beneath the lower lip shall not exceed one inch (1“) laterally and one-half inch (1/2”) from the lip downward.

8. Accessories

  1. The wearing of earrings or other body piercings is prohibited while on duty.

  2. Necklaces, medallions, or pendants, if worn, shall not be exposed while on duty.

  3. The wearing of wrist watches and or identification bracelets is permitted provided the configuration of the article does not interfere with the use of gloves and turnout gear and is not subject to catching or snagging due to being loose on the wrist.

  4. Articles such as watch chains, fobs, jewelry, combs, handkerchiefs, smoking materials, pins, or other items shall not be worn or attached to or otherwise exposed from the uniform, with the exception of approved pins.

  5. The wearing of finger rings is permitted only if the configuration is not overly large or ornate and will not subject the wearer to potential injury. Those which interfere with quick donning of equipment or clothes are prohibited.

  6. Cosmetics shall be limited to conservative color and amount commensurate with Department public image and subject to the approval of the Chief or Chief’s designee.

9. Tattoos

  1. Tattoos, if worn, shall be of non-offensive nature. Suggestive images are prohibited. Tattoos designating gang affiliations are prohibited. Tattoos not conforming to this standard shall be covered by clothing or an approved “sleeve” at all times a member is on-duty.
