Policy/Procedure

1. If a fire is burning inside an oven, and temperatures exceed 600°F, internal safety locks may prevent the door from opening freely. Fire personnel shall not attempt to break the locking mechanism on the oven door in an effort to open it.

2. Fire personnel shall disconnect the electric power or turn off the gas and wait for the oven to cool. If necessary, the oven may be moved outdoors during this time.

3. When the oven cools to approximately 600°F, the door locks will release, allow the door to be opened, and the fire extinguished without further damage to the unit.

4. Fire personnel should use a dry chemical extinguisher to remove the fire hazard.

5. If there is a concern about extension of fire to the structure, the unit should be moved to a safe area outdoors.
