Policy/Procedure
1. The first unit on scene shall establish Command and give a condition report including extent of fire.
2. As lumberyard fires typically spread rapidly, Command shall consider additional equipment, manpower, and water supply early in the fire.
3. Fire personnel shall lay supply lines as needed. Initial fire streams from 2 ½” or larger hoselines shall be initially placed on the leeward (down wind) side of the fire to prevent fire spread.
4. If possible, the initial attack shall be made on exposed piles of lumber and buildings that are threatened. Later arriving companies shall attack the main body of fire.
5. Command shall request the response of additional units to patrol the area for spot fires.
6. During overhaul, crews shall be mindful of the potential collapse of piles of lumber. Bulldozers or end-loaders will be helpful in turning over piles that need to be fully extinguished.
