C-6 Altercations Involving Fire Personnel and Civilians

Policy/Procedure

Altercations shall be avoided whenever possible. However, in the event that an altercation develops between Fire Department personnel and a civilian(s), the following procedures shall be followed:

1. Fire personnel shall protect themselves and their co-workers.

2. Fire personnel involved shall request a Police Crew ‘Code 3’ and or press the Emergency Button(s) on their portable radios. They shall inform Dispatch they are involved in an altercation.

3. An additional first responder shall be requested, if necessary.

4. Names of all personnel on the scene shall be provided to responding police crews.

5. A Battalion Chief shall be dispatched to the scene. The Battalion Chief shall investigate the incident immediately and inform the appropriate Deputy Chief of the details surrounding the incident at his/her earliest convenience. The Battalion Chief shall write a Communication to the Chief of the Department, through the appropriate Deputy Chief, stating the facts of the investigation.

6. Officers shall document the incident in the Company Journal.
