Policy/Procedure

1. Cold Weather Procedures:

1. Following use in cold weather, in order to prevent freezing of the hydrant, crews shall shut off the hydrant and remove an unused cap to relieve the pressure in the hydrant barrel and the hose lines. Water should be kept flowing until just before lines are to be picked up to prevent freezing of either hydrant or hoses.
   
   
2. The supply line(s) shall be removed and all but one cap replaced.
   
   
3. Dispatch shall be notified of the hydrant used and a notation made in the company journal.
   
   
4. Dispatch must be notified in order to alert the Water Department of the potential problem.

2. Hydrants O/S:

1. Dispatch will notify stations of hydrants that are out of service. Refer to the Water Main Procedure, for water main break procedures.
   
   
2. If several hydrants are out in an area, the first due engine shall go to that area at the first opportunity and check the area for the closest in-service hydrants. After returning to quarters, the Fire Officer shall call and fax the second and third due engine companies in that area and inform them of the best direction to come in from and where the closest hydrants are. He or she shall deliver this information to the oncoming shift.
   
   
3. The Water Division will place an orange cap on the “big-way” connection of individual out-of-service hydrants.
   
   
4. If a hydrant is found inoperable, fire personnel shall report that information to Dispatch as soon as practical.
