Policy/Procedure

1. When circumstances surrounding the death of a patient appear to point to homicide, the Incident Commander shall immediately notify Dispatch via two-way.

2. Firefighters shall endeavor to maintain the integrity of the scene. Fire personnel shall not cover the body. Fire personnel shall make every effort to shield the body from onlookers, including family members. Fire personnel shall utilize “scene tape” to cordon off the area and shall declare it a crime scene. All unnecessary personnel shall be prevented from entering the area until command of the scene is assumed by law enforcement.

3. Fire personnel shall not discuss the circumstances of the scene with civilians. If fire personnel are not needed to mitigate an emergency, their access to the room shall be limited.

4. The Incident Commander shall note all actions taken to determine that the person was deceased, including any resuscitative measures taken. These actions shall be reported to law enforcement officers upon their arrival and included in the incident report. Pertinent information shall be noted in the company journal.

5. Upon the arrival of law enforcement officers, fire personnel shall provide all requested information accurately and to the best of their ability. Incident Commanders shall obtain law enforcement unit or crew numbers and relinquish command of the scene to them.
