Policy/Procedure
The following procedures shall be followed when fire personnel are dispatched to an incident where gasoline has spilled from a fuel tank:
1. The Incident Commander shall make every attempt to keep gasoline from entering a sewer or waterway.
2. If a spill is located on a public street, crews shall cover the spilled gasoline with sand or some other inert material. This will stop the flow of gasoline from entering sewers and also help to absorb the fuel.
3. Small spills can usually be handled by shoveling dirt from a location near the area (such as from a curb or landscaped area) onto the spill. Fire personnel shall request permission to remove soil from private property.
4. Upon arrival at the site of a large spill, the Incident Commander shall discuss with TPD to have them order sand and estimate the amount needed to the location.
5. City or State trucks will not deliver sand to private property such as a parking lot or gas station. It will be the responsibility of the owner to get sand to those locations. Fire personnel are still required to keep the gasoline from flowing into a sewer or waterway and to stand by until the situation is secure. The Hazardous Materials Unit has absorbent material that can be used, if necessary.
6. See C-121 COT Environmental Services for guidance when they should be notified.
