Policy/Procedure

1. Personal protective equipment (PPE) shall be worn by all members on EMS runs.

2. A Patient Hot Zone shall be established for all EMS incidents. The Patient Hot Zone shall be five (5) feet or closer to the victim(s). The Patient Hot Zone may be in addition to a larger hot zone established by the incident commander for the purpose of scene management.

3. Members within the Patient Hot Zone shall utilize PPE appropriate for the incident. At a minimum, protective equipment shall include examination gloves and approved eye protection. (Approved eye protection shall be considered prescription glasses designed to cover both the front and side of the eye, or non-prescription eye protection issued by TFRD.) Company Officers shall be held accountable for assuring the use of minimum PPE by all members.

4. The Incident Commander may mandate use of masks and gowns to supplement glove and eye protection on incidents where exposure potential is significant, including obstetrical, mass-trauma, ‘explosive vomiting’, patients with uncontrollable coughing, HIV, measles, hepatitis and the like. Dispatch may call your attention, via the radio, to this higher level of concern as a note in CAD if they have this information from the call taker. Although they may only be needed on occasion, gowns and protective apparel shall be accessible at all times.
