Policy/Procedure

1. During the initial scene ‘size-up’ of an electroplating plant fire, the incident commander shall consider requesting the response of the Haz-Mat unit.

2. Fire personnel shall cover all uninvolved tanks or baths to keep water out.

3. Fire personnel shall avoid throwing water into tanks if they cannot be covered.

4. Fire personnel shall treat the incident as a hazardous materials spill and shall wear full protective clothing and SCBA throughout its mitigation.

5. Fire personnel shall attempt to dike all spills.

6. The use of fog is preferred to avoid stirring up dust and grinding operations and/or overfilling of acid baths.

7. Fire personnel shall de energize equipment only after consultation with a foreman or maintenance man familiar with the plant. Crews shall not shut-off gas without consultation with building maintenance.

8. Fire personnel shall endeavor to cool all exposures.

9. Fire personnel shall utilize extreme caution during overhaul, as there are a great number of caustics present at these facilities. Full protective clothing shall be worn through the entire overhaul process.
