Policy/Procedure

1. All particulate respirators shall meet standards set in NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84.

2. If assigned a respirator, a fit test shall be employed to ensure the correct size respirator is selected. The fit test procedure shall be done in accordance with criteria set forth in OSHA regulation 1910.134.

3. If assigned a respirator, fire personnel shall be properly fit-tested using a qualitative fit test and periodically thereafter. Each member shall be fit tested at least once every three years. Fit testing shall be repeated whenever there is a weight gain or loss of more than 20 pounds or whenever there is any condition that may affect the respirator fit. During fit testing members shall be trained in proper donning of the mask.

4. A report documenting the fit test shall be completed and kept on record. Records shall be maintained in a database that includes the date of the test and the size of the mask required.

5. Masks are for single use only. They should not be cleaned or reused. The mask shall be placed out of service and discarded whenever there is evidence of physical damage to the mask.
