Each shift has a primary Safety Officer (SO #134), three backup Safety Officers and a few reserve Safety Officers. In addition, we trained all EMS Officers (#123) so that they too can be used as an Incident Safety Officer if the need happens.

Assignments:
The primary Safety Officer will be assigned daily to the #134 Safety Officer position. In their absence, one of the backup Safety Officers will be assigned. There will no longer be a ranked order to determine which backup (SO #134) to use and the rotation should be relatively equal and keep all familiar with the specific job duties and responsibilities.

Recall:
When none of the primary or backup (SO #134) are scheduled to be on-duty; (a) And, it will create an overtime spot to move a reserve (SO #134) into the #134 position, then a recall request will be sent to fill the #134 position. The recall list includes only the primary and backup (SO #134). (b) And, enough staffing is on-duty or expected to be on-duty that moving a reserve (SO #134) into the 134 position will not create an overtime spot, then a reserve (SO #134) will be assigned to the #134 position.

Duties:
The Safety Officer (#134) will always be the primary Safety Officer on our emergency scenes when they are on-scene. The EMS Officers (#123) were trained as Safety Officers so that they can proficiently perform those duties when they get to the emergency scene before the (SO #134) or when a second incident happens that a SO is needed there also.

Once the (SO #134) arrives on-scene, they shall assume the Safety Officer duties and the EMS Officer (#123) shall return to their primary EMS duties and this shall be announced. If the incident does not require the EMS Officer (#123) to perform EMS duties at the moment, then they can be another set of ‘safety eyes’ for the emergency scene

Thank You
