Initial fire streams from 2 ½” or larger hoselines shall be initially placed on the leeward (down wind) side of the fire to prevent fire spread. * **NOTE:** It is understood that this may be a punishing position to operate from; however, it is usually the best tactical position on the fireground. Fire personnel operating from such a position shall identify escape routes in advance and be prepared to utilize those routes at any time. Fire personnel shall not operate from positions of entrapment. **4.** If possible, the initial attack shall be made on exposed piles of lumber and buildings that are threatened. Later arriving companies shall attack the main body of fire. * **NOTE:** It is important to get ahead of the fire, especially if the wind is a factor. **5.** Command shall request the response of additional units to patrol the area for spot fires. * **NOTE:** These fires can produce flying brands and sparks that can start fires a considerable distance away. **6.** During overhaul, crews shall be mindful of the potential collapse of piles of lumber. Bulldozers or end-loaders will be helpful in turning over piles that need to be fully extinguished. \\ ---- See Also:\\ ---- <- c_manual:C63 ^ c_manual:start|Index ^ c_manual:C65 ->
