**Policy/Procedure** 

If sent to a structure fire or fire causing monetary damage to property started by a child playing with matches, a
candle, lighter, or other incendiary device, the Fire Investigative Unit should be contacted at the time of the
incident. There are several reasons for this:

**1.** If the fire involving a dwelling was severe enough, the occupants may be forced to move to another
location making it difficult or impossible to locate the child.

**2.** A crime may have been committed. If the fire caused damage to a rented structure, the owner has the
right to prefer charges. The fire shall be investigated and documented by an arson investigator.

**3.** Fire Investigative Unit members are qualified in channeling juvenile fire starters into, an educational
awareness program designed to foster respect for fire and the damage it can cause.
