**Policy/Procedure** 

**1.** During the initial scene ‘size-up’ of an electroplating plant fire, the incident commander shall consider requesting the response of the Haz-Mat unit.

**2.** Fire personnel shall cover all uninvolved tanks or baths to keep water out.

**3.** Fire personnel shall avoid throwing water into tanks if they cannot be covered.

**4.** Fire personnel shall treat the incident as a hazardous materials spill and shall wear full protective clothing and SCBA throughout its mitigation.

**5.** Fire personnel shall attempt to dike all spills.

**6.** The use of fog is preferred to avoid stirring up dust and grinding operations and/or overfilling of acid baths.

**7.** Fire personnel shall de energize equipment only after consultation with a foreman or maintenance man familiar with the plant. Crews shall not shut-off gas without consultation with building maintenance.

**8.** Fire personnel shall endeavor to cool all exposures.

**9.** Fire personnel shall utilize extreme caution during overhaul, as there are a great number of caustics present at these facilities. Full protective clothing shall be worn through the entire overhaul process.
