**Policy/Procedure** 

**1.** The Incident Commander shall give a condition report upon arrival.

**2.** If the dumpster is against or in close proximity to a structure, firefighters first consideration shall be given to the exposed building. Firefighters shall protect any vehicle or property that could become involved.

**3.** Fire personnel shall be careful of small explosions that may occur from aerosol cans or other discarded materials. Firefighters shall avoid sticking their heads inside of the dumpster while extinguishing fire or during the initial stage of overhaul. At all times during extinguishment and overhaul of dumpster fires, firefighters shall be in full protective gear, including SCBA.

**4.** If crews are called to the same dumpster or area several times during the tour, they shall consider flooding the dumpster to hamper ease of ignition.

**5.** A dollar loss should always be estimated on a dumpster fire and documented in all required reports.
